Polygamy is one of social realities that’s still been a controversy in Indonesia as one of the largest moslem countries in the world. Conflict that happens in polygamy marriage touched a young Indonesian Director, Nia Dinata, to make a movie about polygamy marriage, titled “Berbagi Suami (Love for Share).
“Berbagi Suami (Love for Share)â€? had three stories about polygamy marriages of three women from three different characters, social classes, and ethnic backgrounds; Salma (a gynecologist with wealthy life and had a real estate businessman husband, Pak Haji, who had another wives after her), Siti (a Javanese village girl who became a driver’s third wife), and Ming (a young Chinese-Indonesian who became a restaurant businessman’s second wife).    Â
The social reality about polygamy marriage in this film made the researcher to make it into the object of research, by using a qualitative research method with semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. The signs in movie, both verbal and visual, described based on structures of signifier and signified, and then identified them in terms of connotative and denotative parts, based on the theory.
The result of this paper concluded that the polygamy marriage is not a simple thing; full of conflict internally, not only for the wives, but also for the husband and their children. Finally this research also concluded that three women that presented in this movie could erase the woman’s image that sometimes just being judged as a week people and very depends on men, because even though at the beginning they just accepted their destiny as men’s objects, but in the end of the story they had their own decisions.  -  Vol 2 No 2 Mei 2007
